NetAlive Documentation

Network Interface Category

The released versions of NetAlive have the Winsock facility disabled. This results in the lower half of the Network Interface dialog being "disabled."

Please check "Use browser to access Internet" and "Use browser to access Enterprise."

The remainder of this file applies to a version of NetAlive unavailable to the public. If you read it anyway, feel free to send me email and I might enable the features.

Multiple Winsocks

NetAlive can support separate network interfaces for an internal (enterprise) LAN and an external (Internet) connection.

This feature is not necessary in a corporate environment where the enterprise network connects to the Internet via a bridge, gateway, or firewall. These users should leave the two Winsock parameters blank.

This features is not necessary for low-end users where a non-networked computer connects to the Internet via a telephone connection. These users should leave the two Winsock parameters blank.

Some intermediate users may require this feature. This feature applies if your computer is part of an enterprise network that does not connect to the Internet. You will connect to the Internet using a modem-based package through an Internet service provider. These users will have two independent network interfaces on their computer. These parameters permit NetAlive to select the proper interface for each action.

These users must first find the two copies of the "winsock.dll" file. Then, at least one of these files must be renamed (this is because Windows has trouble distinguishing between dll files with the same name but in different directories). The names of these two files must be entered explicitly in the two Winsock parameters below.

Enterprise Winsock

The "Enterprise Winsock" parameter specifies the .dll file for accessing the internal LAN.

Act as Server for Enterprise

The "Act as Server for Enterprise" parameter tells Net Alive! to load and listen on the enterprise Winsock immediately upon starting. This permits NetAlive to act as a daemon or server for applications running on the internal LAN. If this parameter is not selected, NetAlive will load the enterprise Winsock only in response to an outgoing request.

Internet Winsock

The "Internet Winsock" parameter specifies the .dll file for accessing the Internet.

Act as Server for Internet

The "Act as Server for Internet" parameter tells Net Alive! to load and listen on the Internet Winsock immediately upon starting. This permits NetAlive to act as a daemon or server for applications running on the Internet. If this parameter is not selected, NetAlive will load the Internet Winsock only in response to an outgoing request.
